Cleaning Stains and Smells From Your Carpet

There’s nothing more frustrating than being unable to discover the source of a foul smell in your home. You’ve checked the rooms for laundry, washed all the dishes and confirmed that there aren’t any fresh pet accidents waiting to be cleaned. Then it occurs to you that perhaps the odor is coming from the carpet itself. As frustrating as the odor is, knowing that it’s imbedded in your carpet is even worse. Fortunately, there are ways to address this issue and eliminate the odor that is plaguing your carpet. The Power of Baking Soda It’s cheap, it’s effective and it’s safe for the family and pets. Sprinkle baking soda over the carpet and allow it to sink in for a few hours. Using your vacuum cleaner, remove the baking soda and the foul smell. Pull the machine back towards you as slowly as possible to effectively clean away the baking soda and odor. Steam Cleaners and White Vinegar White vinegar is excellent for removing odors, and it’s safe to run through most machines. Add a cup of vinegar to your fresh water cup and steam clean the carpet. Be sure to pull the machine towards you slowly, and watch the water coming through to be sure you are pulling up as much of it as possible. The carpet will initially smell like vinegar, but that odor will fade quickly. If you have pets, it’s highly recommended that you use white vinegar to clean up after their house-training accidents. Mix the Two for Smoke Smells The problem with smoke odors is that they sink into carpet fibers and linger in the air. Baking soda will remove the odor from your carpet, but it’s still in the air and can settle onto the fibers again. After you have cleaned your carpet with the baking soda and vacuum cleaner, set a few bowls of distilled white vinegar around the room. Allow them to remain there for several days to absorb the odors that linger in the air. The Wonderful Scent of Fresh Lemons They smell good, and they are incredible cleaners. A little lemon juice can go a long way if you are dealing with the odor in one small area of the carpet. Mix lemon juice with a little water and scrub it into the area using a clean cloth. Rinse the area and clean the lemon juice away using your steam cleaner with a small amount of detergent. Allow it to dry and the smell should be gone.

Your carpet should be a source of joy in the home, but it can become a source of misery if it is holding onto an unpleasant odor. Baking soda and your vacuum cleaner will work wonders at removing the stench, but you may need to do a little more.
